A "Busted" MetaphorSubmitted by Brian on Sat, 09/20/2008 - 14:16Social Darwinism's metaphor is built in. Free markets should evolve and regulate themselves as nature does. While the corrections and adjustments may be brutal in the short term, they bring long term balance and stasis. Or so the metaphor goes.... The Milton Freedman, Chicago school, view is that government's role, it's only role, is to protect borders and enforce contracts. And even this week as walls are tumbling down the proponents of deregulation are holding fast to their positions. I can't get out of my head the comments of Alan Hess on KUOW's weekday this week. towards the end of the interview things got heated (at least for host Steve Scher) when Hess asserted that the FDIC insurance on savings accounts was having a detrimental effect market's ability to adjust. Ironically this claim was made at the same time that news the Primary Reserve Fund was scrambling to stall redemptions in what was quite clearly a run on the uninsured fund.
Hello BabySubmitted by Brian on Thu, 09/04/2008 - 21:26We got our first peek at our child today through an ultrasound. the picture was super clear, and we both gasped when we saw him?/her? put up a hand in response to all the prodding by the nurse. It was kind of like "Hey quit it!" I was hit with a wave of emotion, seeing our child move. It was a small thing on a monitor, but some how it made viscerally real something that had bee sort of abstract until that moment. I left wishing for a ultrasound of my own to peek in on our child every now and again. It was a magic moment.
The Google Chrome ComicSubmitted by Brian on Tue, 09/02/2008 - 10:37Driving in this morning I heard that Google had sent out a comic describing their new browser. "Clever Marketing" I thought. It turns out it's a lot more. The Chrome team lays out a treatise on their competitive philosophy, development practices and through every page reiterates a commitment to solving user's problems with technical innovation. As a PM I also can't help admiring a document that makes concepts like multi-threading and garbage collection relevant and interesting to the user. Worth a read if you can spare a little time.
