Babe Ruth was on SteroidsSubmitted by Brian on Wed, 02/18/2009 - 01:48Back in 2002 I was pondering how to pick up players that objectively hit the ball far in my fantasybaseball league. The idea being that those players consistently would produce big power numbers. "The Physics of Baseball" breaks down the anatomy of "hitting the ball far." It turns out it is pretty simple: ball speed and bat speed make up almost all of the factors at play. Wind, spin, trajectory play roles as well. So if we assume that over the course of a season the speed of the many pitches that the batter faces average out, as does wind, spin and varying trajectories, then the question becomes how do you isolate the ability to generate big bat speed? Or in other words how do we measure ball hit far? Paradise LostSubmitted by Brian on Mon, 02/16/2009 - 23:31Nina and I escaped to Orcas Island for a short weekend get away, while we can still do that sort of thing. Things get different in 7 weeks and counting. We don't really know how, but that is the party line and we have adopted it. It was a really nice weekend; the sort of overnight trip that feels a lot longer. It was also our first trip back to Orcas since the wedding. The sun was out, the new lambs frolicking in the fields (seriously, you can't make this stuff up).
Baby in 3DSubmitted by Brian on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 18:32We got to see the boy today in 3D. It is a type of ultrasound that renders 3 dimensional images; the results were really something. The technition was really proud of her work and showed it off around the office afterwards. We are pretty proud of work too; we think he is pretty cute. He's getting a lot bigger: 5.8lbs (estimated based on head and body dimensions. They say 1/2lb a week towards the end, so we could be looking at a 8.8lb baby. The doctor told us not to put to much in that. She is predicting 8 lbs. What ever it is he is still sporting an above average head: 36 weeks by the measurement. What are you going to do: it's a Gill noggin. There are a bunch more pictures here. Project Retro #1: 2002 HikesSubmitted by Brian on Thu, 02/05/2009 - 21:57I've been working on getting old photos into the site. This is the first in a set. I moved out to Seattle in 2002 in april and spent a rather idealic summer hiking, bbqing and playing whiffleball on the weekends with new friends.
